Ordering the wrong spare part costs more in downtime than it does in money. The good news is that choosing correctly is a methodical process, not a guess.

This article sets out the checks worth making before you place an enquiry for a pillar drill machine part.

Start with the machine size

Pillar drill machines are commonly described by their drilling capacity or by the pillar diameter. This single figure narrows down almost every part on the machine — brackets, tables, spindles and racks are all scaled to it.

If the machine has no visible plate, measure the pillar diameter and the table size and quote those instead.

Measure the part properly

Use a vernier caliper rather than a tape wherever possible. For a rotating part, the critical dimensions are bore, outer diameter, overall length and any keyway width.

Gears and pinions

Count the teeth and note the outside diameter and bore. Tooth count plus outside diameter lets the pitch be worked out, which is what determines whether the new gear will mesh with the parts already in your machine.

Pulleys

Note the number of steps, the largest and smallest diameters, the bore and the keyway. Also confirm the belt section currently in use, since the groove profile must suit it.

Threaded parts

For nuts and studs, record thread diameter, pitch and usable length. A thread gauge is worth keeping in any workshop that maintains its own machines.

Check what else is worn

Wear is rarely isolated. A worn bearing housing will destroy a new bearing; a worn rack will chew through a new pinion. Before ordering a single part, inspect the components that work directly against it and decide whether they should be renewed together.
