Complete Guide to Drill Machine Spare Parts

Most workshops only look closely at their drill machine when something stops working. At that point the difficulty is rarely the repair itself — it is knowing what the failed component is called and which part to ask for.
This guide walks through a pillar drill machine assembly by assembly, explains what each spare part does, and gives you the vocabulary to describe the part you need when you send an enquiry.
Power transmission parts
Power leaves the motor through the motor pulley and reaches the machine head through a belt. Inside the head, the main pulley with gear, pulley gear, main gear, back gear and pinion form the gear train that converts that belt drive into usable spindle speed and torque.
Symptoms in this group are audible. Belt slip and loss of speed under load point to worn pulley grooves. Rattling, knocking or a machine that jumps out of its low-speed setting points to gear teeth.

Spindle and feed components
The spindle assembly is where accuracy lives. The main spindle carries the chuck, the ram (quill) slides to provide downward feed, and the spindle nut sets bearing preload so there is no end play.
Feed behaviour is controlled by the eccentric and the depth gauge, while the coil spring returns everything to the top position when the handle is released.
How to tell if the spindle is the problem
Mount a straight, sharp drill and run the machine without cutting. Visible wobble at the tip usually means runout in the spindle or its bearings. If the drill is steady while spinning but wanders as soon as it touches the job, look at the ram fit instead — play in the sliding member allows sideways movement under cutting load.
Table and column components
The square table, table bracket and pillar bracket carry the job. Height adjustment is handled by the rack gear, rack gear worm, rack housing and rack handle, with the rack lock ring holding the set position.
A table that creeps downward while drilling is almost always a locking or clamping problem rather than a table problem — check the lock ring and bracket clamp before replacing anything larger.
Tapping and supporting components
Machines set up for tapping use a tapper block, tapper block with gear and tapper block studs. Across the rest of the machine, supporting parts such as the spring housing, bearing housing, slotted sleeve, motor plate and bakelite knobs keep everything located and comfortable to operate.
These are inexpensive items, but they are frequently the actual cause of a complaint that looks like a major fault.

- Meshing gears wear together. If one gear is badly worn, a new gear running against the old profile will wear quickly, so it is usually better to replace the mating part at the same time.
